The State has excellent
network of banks. As on 31st March 2005, the state has 3493 commercial
bank branches. This includes 808 branches under State Bank group; 1205
other nationalized banks, 359 regional rural banks and 1121 other
commercial banks. Out of the total bank branches, 345 are in rural
areas, 2491 in semi-urban areas and 657 are functioning in urban areas.
Total deposit from these branches during the year 2004-05 was Rs.70461
crores and credits made were Rs.39351 crores. |

The credit deposit (CD)
ratio of banks in the State has improved by 7.12 percentage points
during the first nine months of 2005-06, according to data presented at
the quarterly meeting of the State Level Bankers' Committee (SLBC) held
at Thiruvananthapuram. The CD ratio was 59.01 per cent on March 31,
2005. It improved to 66.13 percent by December 31, 2005, indicating
robust absorption of credit by various sectors of the State's economy. |

The CD ratio was 56.17
per cent on December 31, 2004. It has improved by 9.96 per cent during
the calendar year 2005. |

The total deposits with
the commercial banking system in the State reached Rs.72,877 crores on
December 31, 2005. Of this, the NRE contribution accounted for Rs.29.641
crores. |
|
|
|
The advances came to
the tune of Rs.48,196 crores and the total advances and investments of
the banks in Government approved debentures and securities (C+I:D)
Rs.51,080 crores. The C+I:D ratio, another indicator of the banks�
contribution to the growth of the Sate's economy, thus reached the level
of 70.01 per cent. The advances to priority sector touched Rs.25,458
crores. This is 52 percent of the total amount outstanding under
advances. During the first nine months of 2005-06, the banks disbursed
Rs.15,410 crores to the priority sector, achieving nearly 80 percent of
the priority sector lending target fixed for the financial year.
